Dr. Yvonne Buys

Dr. Yvonne BuysDr. Yvonne Buys earned her MD degree at the University of Toronto. She completed a fellowship in ophthalmology in 1992, and earned the Diploma of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1993. She is a Full Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the Co-Director of the Glaucoma Unit at the University Health Network.

As an educator, Dr. Buys has designed and implemented a unique and comprehensive introductory course for ophthalmology residents at the University of Toronto. This course is the only one of its kind in Canada, and has been recognized nationally and internationally for its unique educational value. In recognition of Dr. Buys’ pioneering work in course development, she has received two prestigious teaching awards: the Toronto Hospital Anderson Award in 1998, and the University of Toronto Clive Mortimer Postgraduate Teaching Award in 1999. Dr Buys is a member of the Fellowship Committee with the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto and has trained over 20 Glaucoma Fellows, from all continents and from countries as far away as Saudi Arabia and Australia.

In addition to her academic work and her clinical practice, Dr. Buys is actively involved in numerous professional organizations, including Past-President of the Canadian Glaucoma Society, Past-President and founding member of the Toronto Area Glaucoma Society, society editor for International Glaucoma Review, noneconomic loss physician for the WSIB, and a member of the American Glaucoma Society, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, among many others. Dr. Buys is a past examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Recently Dr. Buys was involved in developing the Canadian Glaucoma Guidelines which were published in 2009. She has been a principal investigator on many research endeavors, and has published over 65 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 9 invited editorials and 7 book chapters. Dr. Buys made over 140 presentations at meetings and symposiums and is frequently invited to speak at scientific conferences across North America and internationally.

Dr. Buys’ research interests are focused in the area of glaucoma and more specifically include studies of:

  • Glaucoma epidemiology
  • Health economics in ophthalmology and glaucoma
  • Surgical innovations in glaucoma and cataract
  • Optic nerve imaging
  • Sleep issues in glaucoma
  • Visual function
  • Ocular blood flow
